What is a pure sequence in Rummy
A pure sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit with no joker in the group. In standard Indian Rummy you need at least one pure sequence before a valid declare — impure runs and sets can finish the rest of the hand.
What counts as pure?
Same suit, consecutive ranks, natural cards only. Examples: 4♦ 5♦ 6♦, 9♠ 10♠ J♠, and (when the table allows A-high) Q♥ K♥ A♥. Two-card runs never count. Four-card runs are still pure if every card is natural and consecutive in one suit.
How is it different from an impure sequence?
An impure sequence uses a printed joker or wild joker as a substitute — for example 5♥ 6♥ Joker standing in for 7♥. That group can help you finish, but it does not satisfy the pure-sequence requirement. If your only run uses a joker, you are not ready to declare.
Pure sequence vs set
A set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits (7♠ 7♥ 7♦). Sets are not sequences. You still need a separate pure sequence even if you hold two strong sets. Mixing the words “set” and “sequence” is a common reason for wrong declares.
Ace, wraps, and table quirks
Many Indian Rummy sheets allow A-2-3 and Q-K-A as sequences, but not wrap-arounds like K-A-2. Confirm Ace rules on your table once. Printed jokers never sit inside a pure run; wild jokers of a declared rank also do not make a pure run if used as substitutes.
Why tables force one pure sequence
The rule stops players from finishing only with jokers and wilds. It rewards natural structure early in the hand. Practical habit: lock a pure run before you invest heavily in fancy sets or long impure chains.
Quick checklist before you declare
Confirm one run is same suit, consecutive, and joker-free. Confirm every other card sits in a legal impure run or set. Confirm no orphan card remains. If any line fails, fix the hand or drop — do not “hope the client accepts it.”
FAQ
Can a joker ever sit in a pure sequence?
No. If a joker is used, that sequence is impure.
Is 5♥ 6♥ 7♦ pure?
No — mixed suits. It may be an impure or invalid sequence depending on the sheet; it is not pure.
Is 5♥ 6♥ Joker pure?
No. The joker makes it impure, even though the ranks look consecutive.
Do I need more than one pure sequence?
Standard 13-card Indian Rummy needs at least one. Marriage / 21-card tables may ask for more — that is a different sheet.
Does a pure sequence beat everything at show?
It is a requirement to declare, not a “highest hand wins” ladder like Teen Patti. Scoring still depends on unmatched cards and format.
