What is a valid set of four in Indian Rummy
In standard 13-card Indian Rummy, a set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. A valid set of four uses one card from each suit — for example 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ 7♣. You cannot place two cards of the same suit in one set; duplicate suit is not allowed. Jokers may fill a missing suit when the room allows jokers in sets, but they do not override the duplicate-suit ban on natural cards. A set is not a sequence: sequences are consecutive ranks in one suit. Valid declares still need at least one pure sequence plus a second sequence before sets can finish the hand. This guide focuses on the four-card set shape, common invalid layouts, and how to check the group before you tap Show.
What a set is (and what it is not)
A set groups one rank across suits. Threes and fours are the usual sizes on Indian app tables. The rank stays fixed — all sevens, or all queens — while suits must differ.
A set is not a run. 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ is a sequence (same suit, consecutive ranks). 5♠ 5♥ 5♦ is a set (same rank, different suits). Mixing those ideas is the root of many invalid shows.
Four-card sets are attractive because they soak four of your thirteen cards into one legal group, but only when all four suits are distinct (or legally filled with jokers per room rules).
The four-suit rule for a set of four
Standard Indian Rummy uses four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs. A natural set of four therefore needs all four suits of the same rank — one each.
Example valid: Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ Q♣. Example invalid: Q♠ Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ — duplicate spade. Even if your shoe has two decks and two Q♠ exist, both spade queens cannot sit in the same set.
This is the same rule that bans duplicate suit in a three-card set (for example 9♠ 9♠ 9♥). The four-card case just makes the “all suits” picture easier to see.
Three-card sets versus four-card sets
A valid three-card set uses three different suits of one rank — 4♠ 4♥ 4♦. The missing suit can remain outside or be filled later into a four-set.
Growing 4♠ 4♥ 4♦ into a four-set means adding 4♣ (or a joker as 4♣ if allowed). Adding a second 4♠ instead is illegal.
You do not need a four-set to declare. Many winning hands use only three-card sets. Chase four only when the fourth suit arrives cleanly.
Jokers inside a set of four
When the room allows jokers in sets, a printed or wild joker can stand for the missing suit. Example: 8♠ 8♥ 8♦ + printed joker as 8♣.
You still cannot use a natural duplicate suit beside the joker to “double” one suit. 8♠ 8♠ 8♥ + joker is not a fix — remove one spade eight.
Jokers in sets never replace the pure-sequence requirement. A hand of beautiful four-sets with no pure run is still invalid on standard tables.
Two-deck reality — why duplicates appear in hand
Online Indian Rummy usually deals from two decks, so holding two 6♠ is possible. That does not make a same-suit pair legal inside one set.
Use the duplicate 6♠ elsewhere: second set if somehow another grouping exists (it usually does not for same rank), discard one, or keep as deadwood carefully.
Auto-sort on phones sometimes stacks both 6♠ beside 6♥ 6♦ and paints a fake “set of four.” Recheck suits with your eyes before declare.
Sets versus impure sequences — do not confuse the shapes
Impure sequence: same suit, consecutive ranks, joker fills a gap — e.g. 9♥ + joker + J♥. Set: same rank, different suits.
Wrong group: 9♥ 9♣ + joker treated as a “sequence.” That is set-shaped with a joker, not a heart run. UI labels can mislead if you drag carelessly.
Before Show, name each group: “pure hearts run,” “impure clubs run,” “set of kings.” If you cannot name them, do not declare.
Where a four-set sits in a legal declare
Typical requirement: at least two sequences, including one pure sequence; remaining cards in valid sets or additional sequences. Exact wording is in table help.
A four-set can be part of the “remaining cards” after lives are secured. It cannot be your only life.
Wrong show penalties are often full-count level. A pretty four-set does not reduce that hit if purity is missing.
Scoring angle — why four-sets feel good
Four cards in a valid set means four ranks matched and usually scoring zero as melded cards when someone else loses — for you, it reduces unmatched deadwood risk if you are valid.
If you are not yet valid, a half-built four-set of face cards is still deadwood exposure. Prefer finishing purity over stretching a set of kings.
On Points at ₹2/point, four unmatched kings can be 40 points (₹80) by themselves. Completing the four-set only helps after lives exist.
Worked example A — clean natural four-set
You hold 3♠ 3♥ 3♦ and pick 3♣ from open or closed. Group as 3♠ 3♥ 3♦ 3♣. All suits differ; rank matches. Valid four-set.
You already have a pure sequence elsewhere and a second sequence. The four-set finishes four cards. Legal show path if the rest of the hand is grouped.
If instead you held 3♠ 3♠ 3♥ 3♦, remove one 3♠ before you even think of Show.
Worked example B — joker completes the fourth suit
Indicator makes wild irrelevant here; you hold printed joker + 10♠ 10♥ 10♦. Group joker as 10♣. Valid four-set on rooms that allow jokers in sets.
Confirm once in help if your room restricts jokers to sequences only — rare on many apps but possible in house variants. Follow the sheet.
Do not also drag a second 10♠ into the same group “for safety.”
Worked example C — invalid duplicate suit caught before Show
Auto-sort shows K♠ K♠ K♥ K♦ highlighted. Beginner taps declare. Room rejects or applies wrong-show penalty — duplicate spade king.
Fix: discard or ungroup one K♠, keep a three-set K♠ K♥ K♦, use the spare king elsewhere or as discard.
Lesson: suit icons matter more than the highlight colour.
Common mistakes with four-card sets
Allowing duplicate suit because “two decks exist.”
Treating same-suit consecutive cards as a set.
Declaring four-sets without a pure sequence.
Using a joker as if it permitted two natural cards of one suit.
Forcing a four-set when a clean three-set plus a safer discard is enough.
Compared with sequences and other guides
Versus sequences: sequences need consecutive ranks one suit; sets need one rank many suits.
Versus duplicate-suit FAQ page: that page argues the ban; this page builds the legal four-set positively.
Versus invalid meld mistakes: broader catalogue of wrong groups; this page zooms on four-set shape.
Versus open-deck play: take open for a fourth suit only when lives are safe or the take is otherwise justified.
Practice plan for four-set literacy
Deals 1–5: each time you hold three of a rank, name the missing suit aloud before you pick or discard.
Deals 6–10: deliberately break any auto-sorted group that shows duplicate suit; regroup manually.
Deals 11–15: practise one joker-as-fourth-suit group on practice mode; then declare only if pure + second sequence exist.
End the block when the time cap hits — not mid-chase after a wrong show.
Tips and checklist
Count suits on your fingers: spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs — all present?
If two icons match, the set is wrong.
- Same rank for every card in the set.
- All suits different for natural cards.
- Joker only as a missing suit if room allows.
- Pure sequence still required for declare.
- Two-deck duplicates ≠ legal same-suit set.
- Recheck before Show, not after the banner.
Responsible play note
Knowing four-set rules reduces invalid declares; it does not guarantee wins.
After a wrong-show hit, lower stake and reopen help — do not raise ₹/point to recover.
Play only where real-money gaming is legal for you.
FAQ
What is a valid set of four in Indian Rummy?
Four cards of the same rank in four different suits — for example 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ 7♣. Duplicate suit is not allowed.
Can I use two cards of the same suit in a set because there are two decks?
No. Duplicate suit in one set is invalid even when two decks deal you two of the same card.
Can a joker complete a four-set?
Often yes, as the missing suit, if the room allows jokers in sets. Confirm in table help.
Is a four-set required to declare?
No. Three-card sets are fine. You need valid sequences first — including one pure sequence on standard rules.
Is 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠ a set of four?
No. That is a sequence (same suit, consecutive ranks), not a set.
Can Ace be in a set with other Aces?
Yes — A♠ A♥ A♦ A♣ is a valid four-set. Ace sequences are a separate topic (A-2-3 or Q-K-A).
Do sets score points if I lose?
Validly melded sets usually do not count as deadwood. Unmatched cards do. No pure sequence can still mean a heavy penalty — read your room.
Why did the app reject my four kings?
Likely duplicate suit, or missing life sequences elsewhere. Check suit icons and pure-sequence requirement.
Can printed joker + three sevens include two spade sevens?
No. Natural duplicates still break the set. Keep only one card per suit plus joker as the missing suit.
Are four-card sets allowed in Pool and Deals?
On standard 13-card Indian Rummy rules, yes — same set definition. Always follow your table help.
Is Marriage Rummy the same?
Marriage / 21-card modes add other combo types. Do not paste this 13-card set guide onto Marriage without reading that help.
Where should I practise?
Practice table or minimum Points. Build one four-set only after naming pure + second sequence.
